1/21/2008 Irresponsible Programming by AMC The American Movie Classics (AMC) channel has a new comedy,"Breaking Bad," about a chemistry teacher who, after learning he has terminal lung cancer, decides he will make and sell crystal methamphetamine (meth) to get money fast for his pregnant wife and teenage son. He travels around New Mexico in a motor home cooking meth.
There is nothing funny about a man:
- Selling an addictive stimulant to kids and adults that causes behavioral and mental problems
-sleeplessness, violent behavior, paranoia and severe depression.
- Willing to expose people to the dangers of cooking meth - The chemicals are toxic. The process
produces poisonous vapors. Meth labs can easily catch fire and explode, and for each pound of meth produced there are 5 to 6 pounds of hazardous waste generated.
- Ignoring a growing population of children being neglected by parents who cook and/or use meth. As a result the number of children being placed in foster care is rapidly rising.

We have been fans of AMC since we put up our first satellite receiver. Now, however, we will have to
watch something else.
We are appalled that you would consider adding to your lineup of presentations something as irresponsible
as a program (Breaking Bad) glorifying in any way the use of crystal meth.
There isn't an ailment of society that isn't caused by or worsened by the use of psychoactive and
addictive substances. In 1986 our son died in his dorm room at the University of Oregon after ingesting a
small amount of cocaine. An autopsy on our son showed no signs of drug use other than a"trace of
cocaine in his urine." The lore of the legalizers (echoed by campus administrators) was that cocaine
was safe if used in moderation. Aside from the fact that it is illegal because it is so dangerous, take a
look at the medical literature for yourself. A small amount of cocaine can trigger a fatal cardiac arrest
up to three days after use. I am one of thousands upon thousands of parents who have lost children to
drugs or whose children's lives have been ruined by their addiction or their destructive behavior under
the influence of drugs.
The devastation, heartbreak related to the use of psychoactive and addictive substances, including lost
and/or degraded lives, child abuse, child neglect, child pornography, unemployment, underemployment,
workplace accidents, lost productivity, poverty, embezzlement, academic under achievement and failure,
increased medical costs, social welfare costs, and crime, cost society hundreds of billions every year -
and that is before adding in the cost of treatment and expenses associated with law enforcement and
incarceration.
It is unconscionable that you would portray the use of these destructive substances in any way that
trivializes their impact on society.
Shame on you.

3/9/2007 Teens At CA School Getting High On Medical Marijuana
Steven Luke, KNSD-TV, San Diego, California.
Officials at the Grossmont Union High School District have sent letters home to parents, notifying them that a number of students have been caught on campus with medical marijuana cards.
District official Catherine Martin said they are concerned over the growing trend and the "apparent ease" with which teens are able to obtain the cards.
In the letters, parents, students and faculty are reminded that even if the cards are valid, it is against the law to have marijuana on school property.
Recently two East County teenagers were suspended for showing up at school high, with a medical marijuana card as their excuse, NBC 7/39 reported.
During a series of recent undercover sting operations, district attorney investigators identified four or five local doctors who are issuing cards or prescriptions without proper exams or follow up medical care.
Mission Valley is one location where officials said illegal drug trafficking has taken place.
San Diego District Attorney Narcotic Chief Damon Mosler told NBC 7/39 a bogus symptom and some cash is all a teenager needs to obtain a medical marijuana card.WBIR.com March 9, 2007.
